IT begins with a small act of kindness on March 6 when Suria donated one dozen books she no longer needed to Children's Trust literacy campaign to mark her 12th birthday.
A few days later, with the help of her mom, Suria launched Page by Page BookDrive within Joshua's Heart Foundation. Suria realized that using her love of reading, she can help improve literacy among youth at risk in Miami. For Suria, life without books is unimaginable and there are many children who don't own books at home to call their own.
The one month BookDrive combined with a unique Batik painting fundraiser event was a huge success. Suria's page by page project collected over 1000 books in just 3 weeks through partnership with several local businesses including funds she raised with after-school donut sales. At this year's Global Youth Service Day weekend, JHF was able to distribute groceries to those in need along with more than 800 books collected through Suria's initiative. It was very satisfying to put these used books in the hands of JHF's families and students from Miramar Elementary, Gulfstream Middle school, as well as after-school program at Little Haiti Cultural Complex and Miami Rescue Mission's Community Activity Center.
Suria also contributed towards other projects within Joshua's Heart and supported the charity organization in making a difference through her dedication and enthusiasm. For the Giving Boutique project, Suria collected the most clothes (over 20 bags) for the homeless and watching these kids smile at JHF distribution event is a constant inspiration for her to give back.
