Elena is one of the original Junior Advisory Board members of Joshua’s Heart Foundation (JHF), which was formed in 2008. By November 2013, she has been able to get more than 650 families to volunteer, get in-kind food donations and help pack and distribute more than 1200 boxes of food to the homeless, as well as raise awareness and help to end world hunger. In the past, Elena has volunteered for years at JHF events and is always ready, willing and able to support Joshua and the foundation. She has also organized toy drives every December to different communities in South Florida. For the last eight years, she has supported the RCMA School in Homestead by donating school supplies through school collections at the end of the school year and also toy drives for the children of migrant farm workers. At Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, where she is currently a senior, she founded her own club: Hopefull Club. Her club strives to help fight hunger in the community by providing the homeless in the Miami area with toiletries and food, as well as emotional support.
Through her project Hopefull she has distributed over 5,000 items for the boxes, made around 2,100 sandwiches, and has distributed over 700 boxes to those in need in the community. She has recruited volunteers at both her school and from Joshua’s Heart Foundation. She has also been able to get more than 650 families to volunteer, get in-kind food donations and help pack and distribute more than 66,000 pounds of food and 1,200 boxes of food for families in need for Thanksgiving, which has become a yearly JHF event.
